How did the day after Thanksgiving become Black Friday?

In 1941, Congress passed a law that made Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November. In the 1950’s people started to call in sick the day after Thanksgiving. They gave themselves a four day weekend so that they can get a head start on their holiday shopping. They try to stay under the radar and not get caught by their boss from work. Most businesses started adding Friday as another paid holiday than trying to determine whose pay should be cut, and who was legitimately sick.

In 1966 the Black Friday name became famous. The Philadelphia Police Department had used the name to describe the shopping chaos at downtown stores. There were traffic accidents and sometimes violence. Eventually Black Friday changed from a negative connotation to a positive one. Businesses were doing so well in profit on Black Friday it became to be known as the “Profit and Discount day.” To encourage more people to shop on Black Friday retailers began to offer deep discounts only available on that day.

So now Black Friday means profitable profitable Friday to retailing and the rest of the economy. Accountants use “Black” to signify profit when recording each day’s book entries and “Red” to indicate a loss. So “Black ” is Good.

Retailers want Black Friday to be a positive event but some shoppers, intent on getting good deal, have turned it into Black-Eye Friday. In recent years the best Black Friday deals are not on Black Friday. With the popularity of online shopping “Cyber Monday” offering the same great deals in the comfort of your own home, many are resorting to online shopping.

Also in Mid December many people are beginning to shop on “Green Monday” to take advantage of last-minute bargains.  Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has decided to re-open Florida Schools. The problem is that Florida is one of the nation’s corona-virus hot spots which makes it a high probability that our children might be expose to the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization say a safe standard for reopening schools would be a corona-virus positivity rate below 5 percent.  Now according to Johns Hopkins University, Florida positivity rate at this point in time is at 17.47 percent. This suggest that Florida Schools should not re-open for face to face learning. It’s of great concern that Orange County Public Schools for the city I’m leaving in won’t be able to guarantee the safety of our staff and students. At this point 50 percent of the school’s students have opted to take online-only classes for the beginning of the semester. The other 50 percent will be attending face to face learning. The question is what can be done for those who chose to attend school for face to face learning?

Those families should protect their children and themselves as best as possible by adhering to certain rules in regards to the corona-virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggested the following:

Wash your hands often with soap for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating or preparing food, before touching your face, after using the restroom, after leaving a public place, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, after handling your mask, after caring for someone sick, after changing a diaper, and after touching animals or pets.

Avoid Close contact- Remember to stay at least 6 feet of distance (two arm length ) between yourself and people who don’t live in your household.

Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others who don’t live in your household. You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. The mask is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. Everyone should wear a mask in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Remember that Masks should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

Cover coughs and sneezes- Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow and do not spit. Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Clean and disinfect- Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.

Monitor Your Health Daily- Be alert for symptoms. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19 such as lack of taste or smell. Take your temperature before going to school or work.

Remember Don’t take your temperature within 30 minutes of exercising or after taking medications that could lower your temperature, like acetaminophen.

Hey, this your boy ReyRey, this morning I went for a run, and I did little over a 3k run. I I actually ran 4.9 miles. It was hot out and at certain points I felt drained and thank God I had water with me. Did you know that water helps regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, transport nutrients, remove waste and circulate blood. When I took swigs of water at different points during my run, it was like shocking my system back to being hydrated. It was so, so refreshing because my water was cold. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body requires water to function properly.

Case and point, you can become dehydrated from sweating, vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, or taking diuretic medications ( also known as water pills which is a common treatment for high blood pressure) which promotes fluid loss.

We need to look out and monitor the signs and symptoms of dehydration especially when we are conducting some type of sport activity like running, working out, swimming and other high intensity activities. These are the signs you need to look out for:

. Increase thirst

. Dry mouth

. Infrequent urination

. Dry skin

. Tiredness

. Dizziness

. Headaches

If you are working out and you feel one of these symptoms, slow your role and assess the situation. Get some fluids in you. When I am running and I feel a slight dizziness I know it’s time to hydrate and slow down my intensity until I recuperate then I continue my workout. I don’t want to be the man to pass out and end up in the hospital for dehydration. It is said an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

Drinking water is most often the best and cheapest way to stay hydrated and to rehydrate. water contains no added sugars or calories, making it ideal to drink throughout the day or specifically when you need to hydrate, such as after a workout or during a workout.

The question is how much water should you drink per day? The body is about 60% water and we are constantly loosing water from our body, primarily via urine or sweat. To prevent dehydration we need to drink adequate amounts of water. Actually there are many different opinions on how much water we should drink a day.

Health authorities commonly recommend eight 8-onces glasses , which equals about 2 liters, or half a gallon. It is known as the 8X8 rule and kind of easier to remember.

Some believe that you need to sip or drink water all day even if you are not thirsty. as with most things it always depends on the individual. The point is we need to drink water everyday. some might say ” I don’t like the taste of water”. I tell you what, do this test. take a glass of room temperature water vs a glass of water with ice in it. I will submit to you that the taste of the water is different.
